01 September 4705 - Once, There Was a Girl
...Who enjoyed party games, especially Mariokart and Mario Party on the
GameCube, and also a small handful of the great board games of our age. She
regretted not being able to play the party games in her dorm, and sought to
change this fact by inviting over everyone she knew who could easily walk to her
dorm, and arranging for them to arrive on the same night as to play the party
games with her.
Time passed, and everyone started living in different places. It was a little
harder to arrange and meet, but this girl liked her games, and thought that the
small tradition of game night ought to continue. She found a night when people
could be most available (especially herself, for she took classes and had a job
to manage), and kept inviting them over.
Then I found a place to live, and it being a single family house with only
college students therein, it was a more suitable place to have people go to play
party games, as we could be louder and the girl wouldn't have to worry about
cleaning up her own place (as she would always insist that it was messy and that
she had a lot of cleaning to do). So I took up the charge in order to relieve
her, and we have had a game night for however long it has been.
But no more.
I'm not sure I could go into all the details if I tried. They are myriad and
legion. Suffice to say, having a standing, open invitation for people to show up
and play whatever is simply not a good system to have going forever. Imagine if
it was at your house. You may not see all the downsides now, but believe me, you
would.
So there's going to be no more of this showing up on Thursday nights and
expecting things.
From now on, if you would like to do something with me, or Darryl, or Josh, or
Dan, you have to arrange for it somehow.
This is a little more difficult, yes. It is certainly necessary.
And you don't have to worry about it being on a Thursday, either. Just call. Or
write. Or even post something on the livejournal.
